CUNYAC announces '24-'25 Major Award Winners, All-Stars; Evans Jr. earns Second-Team Honor, Perez makes Sportsmanship team

On the heels of the 2024-2025 CUNYAC basketball title games, the City University of New York Athletic Conference revealed its end-of-year awards, as voted upon by the league's head coaches. Medgar Evers College's men's basketball teams were well represented, as senior standout Andre Evans Jr. was tabbed a Second Team All-Star, and Michael Perez captured the Sportsmanship award. Following the announcement of the distinctions, Head Coach Brian Nigro gave his thoughts.

"It is extremely satisfying to see two student-athletes as hard-working and dedicated as Andre and Michael get honored by the CUNY Athletic Conference," Nigro said. "Both of those aforementioned players gave 110 percent in every game and practice, and played pivotal roles in leading us to the conference playoffs for the first time since the 2022-2023 season. In his final season for us, Andre made sure that he left his mark on the program, eclipsing 1,000 points and becoming the program's all-time assists leader, while also slotting in second all-time in steals. As for Mike, he was extremely hard-working, and was always up to the task of guarding the opposition's best player. He is respected by the coaches and his teammates. Finally, he is an excellent student, and a great role model for the younger players. I am extremely proud of their accomplishments, and I'm excited to see them take the conference by storm in their senior seasons."

During the 2024-2025 campaign, Andre Evans Jr. was one of the key reasons why the Cougars were able to improve their win total by four games and qualify for the CUNYAC postseason. One of six Cougars to compete in at least 25 of the team's games this season, Evans Jr. averaged 10.1 points per game. Additionally, he finished as the team's leader in assists (92), steals (59), and free throws made (63). Evans Jr. has registered 17 points or more five times, and has dished five assists or more nine times. This season, he became Medgar Evers' all-time assists leader, and on his Senior Night (2/18 vs. John Jay), he scored 20 points to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career.
