Men's Basketball

Boubacar Mbaye, Joash Beaton put forth strong performances as Cougars drop CUNYAC clash to Bloodhounds

Box Score The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team put forth a hearty performance on Friday evening, but ultimately fell short, losing to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in a CUNYAC contest by a score of 85-75. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 0-22 on the 2025-2026 campaign (0-11 CUNYAC), while the Bloodhounds improved to 7-15 (5-6 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Boubacar Mbaye put forth an excellent performance, scoring a team-high 22 points (9-14 FG) to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Joash Beaton nearly posted a double-double, as he finalized his night with 20 points and nine rebounds, and Ahmed Toure posted a double-double with 14 points, a team-high 10 rebounds, and a game-high seven assists. Finally, it was Isaiah Grant contributing 10 points (3-3 FT) for the hosts.

Pacing the Bloodhounds was Keyshawn Miller, as he was locked in all evening, converting on five triples, and 13 of his 19 shot attempts overall, to finish with a game-high 31 points. He also snatched seven rebounds, dished three assists, swatted two shots, and swiped two steals. Jamir Stewart scored 11 points while collecting four rebounds and adding two assists, and Adrian Kopec (11 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals) and Alsseny Diallo (10 points, seven rebounds, four assists) also played key roles in the victory for the visitors.

Medgar Evers raced out of the gate shooting lights-out, as the Cougars drained their first nine shots from the floor, before eventually building a 25-16 advantage midway through the first quarter. Toure scored 10 point during that aforementioned push for Medgar Evers, with Beaton contributing eight.

John Jay then answered with a 14-0 run over a span of 5:49 to catapult ahead by a score of 30-25. Miller led the Bloohounds during that charge, as he drained a pair of triples, and Adrian Kopec capped the run with a three-point basket of his own. The pendulum then swung the Cougars' way, as the hosts put together a 7-0 run (thanks to a bucket by Perez, and five straight points by Boubacar), as Medgar Evers went back up 32-30. The teams would exchange the lead two more times before the buzzer sounded on the first half, with the Cougars taking a 34-33 advantage into the locker room.

The Bloodhounds spent the opening 6:13 of the second half building a seven-point advantage, as John Jay used an 18-10 push to start the third and go up 51-44. Miller and Jordan Amare contributed seven points apiece for the Bloodhounds during that stretch. Later, with 10:35 remaining in the game, Miller knocked down a long triple to put the visitors up 12 (61-49). Of the remaining 10:35 remaining in the game at that juncture, John Jay held a double-digit advantage for 9:46 of it, eventually going on to win the game by 10 (85-75).

Both teams were excellent shooting the basketball on the night with Medgar Evers earning a red-hot 53.3 percent conversion rate from the floor (32-60), and the Bloodhounds nailing 34 of their 64 attempts on the evening (53.1 percent). The Cougars held a slim 33-31 edge on the glass, but John Jay College held advantages in assists (26-21) and steals (7-4). Each team swatted three shots apiece, and the visitors won the turnover battle, committing just 12 miscues on the night, while the Cougars finished with 16.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Wednesday, as the Cougars will welcome CCNY to the Cougars Cave for a crucial CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm. Prior to the game, seniors Michael Perez, Joash Beaton, Ahmed Toure, Boubacar Mbaye, and Nicholas Bocharov, will be honored in a special pregame ceremony, saluting their tenures as Cougars.
