Women's Indoor Track & Field

Women's indoor track and field team earns all three CUNYAC weekly distinctions

The CUNY Athletic Conference announced its women's indoor track and field weekly award winners for the period of Monday, December 4 through Sunday, December 10, and Medgar Evers dominated the distinctions, winning all three awards.

Veteran Nana Samake captured the Athlete of the Week award. Freshman Nia Butler earned the Field Athlete of the Week accolade, and finally, it was Desireth Ramirez earning the honor of Rookie of the Week. All three aforementioned student-athletes earned those awards thanks to their efforts at the Art Kaddish Elm City Challenge in New Haven, Connecticut. Following the announcement of the awards, first-year Head Coach Hugh Reid spoke glowingly of the award winners.

"For the second week in a row to start the 2023-2024 indoor track and field campaign, our women's team has put forth tremendous efforts, showing how dedicated and committed they are to making this program a force to be reckoned with," coach Reid said. "I am super proud of Nana, Nia, and Desireth for their fantastic performance this past weekend. They continue to improve with each passing week, and it's very gratifying to see their diligence pay off by getting recognized with the conference's highest honors. With our student-athletes motivated and poised to continue shattering records, sky is very much the limit."

Nana Samake, who dazzled for the Cougars' indoor track and field team a season ago, put on a tremendous performance competing in her first meet this season. In the mile event, she was the league's fastest finisher, earning a CUNYAC-qualifying time of 6:07.13.

Newcomer Nia Butler put on a tremendous display, turning in the league's best performance in the weight throw with a heave of 8.56 meters. She also recorded a toss of 7.12 meters in the Shot Put event.

Ramirez recorded the league's fastest finish in the 200m with a CUNYAC-qualifying time of 28.12. She also finished the 60m hurdle event in 8.51.

The Cougars' women's indoor track and field team will return to action in the new calendar year, as Medgar Evers will travel to Gorham, Maine on Saturday, January 6 to compete in the USM Open II.
