Cougars' indoor track and field teams showcase talents at Coast Guard Academy Winter Invitational #1

The Medgar Evers College men's and women's indoor track and field competed in their first meet in calendar year 2024 this past Saturday, showcasing their talents at the Coast Guard Academy Winter Invitational (#1). The meet took place at Roland Hall in New London, CT. Student-athletes from both squads put forth some notable efforts, while also gaining valuable experience as they gear up for the stretch run of the indoor track and field season.
 
On the men's side, standout Jahiem Johnson set a Medgar Evers 600m school record when he finished in second place with his time of 1:29.61. The freshman also finished fourth in the men's 200m with a CUNYAC-qualifying time of 23.94 (23.22 – good for No. 1in the conference). He placed 13th in the 55m with a time of 6.96, and also served as a member of the Men's 4x200m relay that finished in second place with a completion time of 1:39.93. Finally, Johnson was also a member of the men's 4x400m relay team that placed 6th in a time of 4:02.49.
 
In addition to Johnson's big day, Dontay Washington finished 7th in the High Jump with a CUNYAC-qualifying mark of 1.65m. He also finished 11th in the long jump with a mark of 5.50m and 22nd in the shot put with a toss of 7.60. Dontay also competed in the men's 55-meter hurdle event, where he set a personal-best mark of 8.95m, finishing in sixth place (converted to a CUNYAC qualifying 9.64 for 60m). Finally, Washington also competed in 400m Dash where he finished 19th and the DMR where he finished 2nd place.
 
Rupert Luard-Charles placed 10th in the men's 400m and finished 13th in the 200m with a time of 24.84. In addition, he finished 18th in the 55m dash with a new PR in a time of 7.05. Luard-Charles was a member of the Men's 4x200m Relay that finished 2nd in a time of 1:39.93. Finally, he was a member of the Men's 4x400m relay team that placed 6th in a time of 4:02.49.
 
The Cougars' women's squad put together some sensational performances as well, starting with Imani Richardson. Richardson placed 4th in the women's 55m dash with a PR of 7.78 (8.31 for 60m – No. 1 in the conference). She also placed 6th in the women's 200m dash, and was a member of the Women's 4x200m relay team that placed 3rd in a time of 2:22.83. Finally, Richardson placed 5th in the women's Long Jump with a mark of 4.33m.
 
Deja Davis registered three personal-bests for the Cougars. The standout finished 9th in the 55m dash with a time of 8.08. Her time converts to a 60m CUNYAC-qualifying mark of 8.71, which currently ranks her fourth in the conference. Deja placed 7th in the Long Jump with a personal-best leap of 4.13m (No. 3 in the conference). She also set a personal record when she placed 5th in the Triple Jump with a leap of 7.10m, and lastly, Davis competed in the shot put where she placed 20th with a toss of 6.18.
 
Nia Butler finished 18th in the women's weight throw with a mark of 5.64m. Additionally, she placed 14th in the women's shot put with a toss of 7.82m. Butler is now ranked No. 1 in the conference.
 
Nana Samake placed fifth in the women's 800m event with a time of 2:50.83.
 
The men's and women's indoor track and field teams will return to action on Sunday, as the teams will travel to Cambridge, MA to compete in the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. The meet will take place at the Gordon Track on the campus of Harvard University.
