Brooklyn, NY- The Men's Soccer team defeated the Baruch College Bearcats 4-2 on Saturday Oct. 15, 2011 at Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, NY. The win for the Cougars improved their record to 3-13 Overall and 2-4 CUNYAC while the Bearcats dropped to 6-8-1 Overall and 4-3-1 CUNYAC.
The weather called for cool and a wind advisory until 10pm that night. Mother nature didn't lie. Wind gusts were measured around 20-25 mph. Depending on what side your back was, you had a huge advantage. Baruch being the road team, had the advantage in the 1st half. Baruch had 15 shots in the half compared to MEC's 4. It wasn't because of Baruch's heavy defense, it was because of the heavy wind. The ball from the Cougars athletes, when kicked in the wind, would go either left or right but not anywhere near the net.
Baruch got on the scoreboard first, when Michael Murphy, the goal keeper, kicked the ball which normally would go abut midfield maybe a little further, but instead flew all the way near the MEC net and keeper Chris Welsh took a couple of steps in, and the ball took a big bounce over his head and into the back of the net. This happened in the 25 minute. Some scrappy play by the Cougars net, and a foul led to a penalty kick from Akil Geogre of Baruch. He scored in the 40th minute, giving Baruch a 2-0 lead.
In the 2nd half, MEC had the wind advantage anc capitalized on it, outshooting Baruch 13-5. The Cougars took the first 5 shots before Baruch made an attempt. In the 62nd minute,
Zeakiel Daley scored on a penalty kick. The score is now 2-1 Baruch. The Cougars would tie this game when Freshman standout
Mohamed Jalloh scored from the right side of the field. The score is now 2-2. Just 2 minutes later,
Zeakiel Daley kicked home is 2nd goal of the game and 15th of the season. This made the score 3-2. Finally in the 85th minute, a pass from
Lerone McIntosh to
Mohamed Jalloh, Jalloh knocked in his 2nd goal of the match, making the score 4-2. This a huge win and a great comeback down 2-0 at the half. This win clinched them a playoff berth and a 8th seed.
For the keepers, Chris Welsh of MEC played the full 90 minutes, gave up 2 goals and made 3 saves. Baruch's Michael Murphy played 90 minutes, gave up 4 goals and 7 saves.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday Oct. 19, 2011 when they play the CCNY Beavers at Randall's Island in New York, NY. Game time is set for 3:30pm.
