Cougars fall to Curry College 5-1 in Season Opener

Madison, NJ- The Medgar Evers College Men's Soccer team opened up the 2011 season with a 2 Day Tournament in Madison, NJ, on the campus of Drew University. They competed in the Drew Fall Festival. The Cougars lost the game 5-1 to the Colonels of Curry College on Saturday Sept. 3, 2011. The Cougars fell to 0-1 while the Colonels improved to 2-0.

The 1st game jitters hit the Cougars on the field. Curry got on the board 1st, when a ball played near MEC's net grazed # 10 Miguel Rodriguez and rolled pass keeper Chris Welsh for a 1-0 Curry goal. Curry would take a 2-0 lead into the half. The Cougars were outshot 11-3 in the 1st half and outshot 8-1 in corners.

In the 2nd half, once again was dominated by Curry College. They picked up 2 quick goals in the 53rd and 58th minutes. MEC joined the party, when Freshman Midfielder Samuel Ballantyne kicked the ball pass the Colonels keeper Brian Newsome in the 58th minute to make the score 4-1 Colonels. Curry would tack on one more goal to make it a final score 5-1. The Cougars were outshot 11-2 in the 2nd half.

For the goalkeepers, Cougars Christopher Welsh gave up 5 goals and made 5 saves, while his counterpart Brian Newsome gave up a goal and 2 saves.

The Cougars will be back in action on Sunday Sept. 4, 2011, when they take on New Jersey City University. Kickoff is set for 2pm.
