Men's Soccer Drops to Maritime after Second-Half Surge, 10-2

Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers men's soccer team put some offensive pressure on in the first half, but a second half run by SUNY Maritime sealed the game away in a 10-2 defeat Monday night at Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck.
 
The Cougars (0-5) got first-half goals from Dave Henry (Carrefour, Haiti/Canarsie) and Joshua Fernandez (Queens, N.Y./Far Rockaway) in a losing effort. Patrick Gentle (Portmore, Jamaica/Jonathan Grant [Jamaica]) added an assist on the Henry score for Medgar Evers, while Jeron Davidson (Arima, Trinidad/Trinity College East) made six saves filling in as goalkeeper.
 
Sheick Wattara secured a hat trick in the victory for the Privateers (3-2), and Kevin Ferreira dished out three assists. Billy Horgan and Renato Chira-Faran each netted two scores, while Brian Gottlieb added a goal and an assist. Maritime outshot Medgar Evers 33-6 during the match, including 20-1 in the game-changing second half.
 
 The Privateers jumped out to an early advantage, with McCarty beating the keeper at 2:15. Wattara's score at 6:54 pushed the lead to two goals for Maritime. The Cougars would chip away at the deficit, as Henry beat the keeper off a Gentle free kick at 8:20. Following Wattara's second goal, Fernandez would grab his first goal of the season at 21:53 when he curled a shot from a corner kick that bounced in off the right post to make it 3-2. A Chira-Farfan header at 43:47 put Maritime up 4-2 as both teams headed to half.
 
In the second half, the Privateers would dominate possession of the ball. Chira-FarFan's score at 51:07 began a six-goal barrage in the half that would salt the game away for Maritime. Wattara would net his third goal of the game after that, the Horgan would score two goals as the Privateers locked up their third win of the season.
 
Up next for the Cougars is a CUNYAC conference matchup on the road against Lehman College Saturday morning. Start time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in the Bronx.
