Box Score 2 ANNADALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team grabbed the opening set of the day, but would eventually drop both ends of a multi-match, losing 3-1 (25-23, 4-25, 18-25, 18-25) to Albertus Magnus then falling to Bard College 3-0 (8-25, 15-25, 13-25) Saturday afternoon at the Stevenson Athletic Center.
For the Cougars (0-13),
Kalifa Roberts (San Fernando, Trinidad/La Romain Secondary) led the way with 19 total kills over the multi-match, including 12 in the first game against Albertus Magnus, along with five service aces.
Naomi Chandler (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Bishop Anstey) had six total kills, while
AnnMarie Benberry (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fashion Industries) added 21 assists in a losing effort.
The Falcons (2-6) got double-digit kills from both Ana Gomez (14, .333 hitting percentage) and Megan Gritz (13, .526 hitting %), while setter Ramona Onorfrio had 29 assists and seven service aces.
Sofia Koukia had a team-high seven kills for the Raptors (7-8), while Philippine Alba had a team-best eight aces and six kills. Victoria Chou dished off 19 assists in the victory.
In the matchup with Albertus Magnus, the Cougars would fall behind 13-5 in set one, but they chipped away and work the deficit to within four. They would trail by eight points (20-12), but kills from Roberts, Chandler help even the score at 21-21. Two straight Roberts aces, followed by an attack error and a
Malado Kaba ace helped close out the set victory for Medgar Evers.
Up 6-3 in the second stanza, Albertus Magnus erupted with 18 unanswered points as they ran away with the set win. In the third, both teams traded the lead back and forth, but after leading 15-13 the Cougars would relinquish their lead after the Falcons scored nine of the next 10 points as they held on for the 25-18. The fourth set followed a similar pattern, with Albertus Magnus running away with the set after Medgar Evers would cut the lead to six points.
Taking on Bard, Medgar Evers would fall behind early in the first, trailing by as much as double digits. After the Cougars cut the lead to eight points at 16-8, the Raptors rattled off nine straight points to take set one. In set two, Medgar Evers built an early advantage paced by a Benberry ace and a Roberts kill. Bard would rally back to tie the game, and score 10 of the next 12 points to force a Cougars timeout.
Trailing by eleven points, they would take advantage of numerous attack errors with a five-point run to pull within 20-14. However, Bard would take control of the set and close it out. An early start by the Raptors (10-2 run) in the third set doomed Medgar Evers as they were defeated in three straight.
Up next for the Cougars is a road match taking on Farmingdale State College Tuesday night. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
