Box Score 2 WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team was defeated by Mount Holyoke Academy 3-0 [25-3, 25-18, 25-8] in the first match, then was beaten 3-0 [25-9, 25-6, 25-13] by the University of St. Joseph in a tri-match on the campus of University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford Saturday afternoon.

Kalifa Roberts (San Fernando, Trinidad/La Romain Secondary) led the Cougars (0-3) with 10 digs, four total kills over the tri-match, and also added two service aces.
Malado Kaba (Conakry, Guinea/Emmaus) chipped in with three aces and eight digs in a losing effort. On the assist side, primary setter
AnnMarie Benberry (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fashion Industries) topped the team with four assists on the day.

In the first match with Mount Holyoke, the Lyons (3-0) got a balanced attack with Joy Meran leading the way with a game-high five kills and six service aces. Katrina Meserve and Sarah Caggiano each totaled four kills, while Natalie Lyon dished out a match-best 18 assists.

The first set saw Mount Holyoke rip off a 10-0 start to the game, then added eight straight more a few plays later to run away with the win. In set two, Medgar Evers would attempt a rally, with Roberts scoring three straight times on two kills and a service ace to go up a point. They then would move ahead with a 10-6 lead with four straight points, including another Roberts kill and a
Naomi Chandler (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Bishop Anstey) ace.

The Lyons would take advantage of errors by the Cougars to regain the lead. After Medgar would slice the deficit to 21-17, Mount Holyoke would close out the set with four of the next five points for the set victory. They would gain an early lead in set three to complete the sweep in the first match of the day.

Facing the Blue Jays (2-1) in match two, the Cougars lost the kills advantage at 23-4. Sarah Lipinksi compiled a match-high seven kills. After Medgar grabbed an early 3-2 in set one, Mount Holyoke rattled off 15 of the next 16 points as they grabbed control.

The second stanza saw the Cougars jump out again to an early advantage with a Roberts kill and a M. Kaba service ace. With the game even at 5-5, a 12-point Blue Jay run helped grab the 2-0 game edge. In the third set, the Cougars hung tough, getting the deficit to within 14-10, but a 9-1 offensive run sealed the victory for the University of St. Joseph.

Medgar Evers will return to action Tuesday when they head to the Garden State to take on the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
