Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers men's volleyball played valiantly throughout, but were defeated in straight sets by Albertus Magnus College, 3-0 [19-25, 15-25, 19-25], in their 2016 home debut at the Cougars Cave.
For the Cougars (0-6),
Jamal Chance (Gouyave, Grenada) led the way with a game-high 11 kills along with two blocks and service aces. Setter
Angel Seda (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished out out 19 assists, while
Shaquille Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had five kills and five digs.
Kareem Cyrus (St. Georges, Grenada) added four kills along with seven digs, and an ace in a losing effort.
Justin Tharau paced the Falcons (2-2) with 10 kills, six service aces and seven digs in the win. Jeremy Ortiz dished out 26 assists, while Ben Spilka (nine kills) and Josh Turner (eight kills) provided spark in the victory for Albertus Magnus.
In the first set, both teams played back-and-forth, but a 6-0 run helped the Falcons pushed their lead to 17-10 as they held on to win 25-19. The second set saw Tharau connect on four straight aces and a Turner kill put Albertus Magnus ahead 5-0, but the Cougars would cut the deficit to 10-8 after kills from Miller and Chance. However, the Falcons would score seven of the next eight points to seal the 25-15 victory in set two. Medgar Evers then fell behind early in the third set as Albertus scored eight of the first nine points and would drop the set 25-19.
Up next for the Cougars is their second CUNYAC multi-match of the season, taking on Baruch College and the College of Staten Island Monday morning at John Jay College.
