Men's Volleyball Loses to St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) in Five-Set Thriller

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team held a 2-1 set lead, but could not hold onto the advantage as they lost to borough rival St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) in an exciting five-set matchup, 3-2 [25-14, 20-25, 25-15, 19-25, 13-15] Wednesday night at the Hill Center.

Jamal Chance (Gouyave, Grenada) led the Cougars (0-2) with 16 total kills along with eight digs and four assists, while Shaquille Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 10 kills and six service aces. They also got 25 assists and 10 digs from primary setter Angel Seda (Arecidbo, Puerto Rico) in a losing effort.

For the Bears (1-0), Clyde Delacruz topped the squad with 14 kills as they won their 2016 debut. Thomas Kennedy tallied eight kills, five aces and a game-high 20 digs, while Alec Smalley slammed nine kills. Norrin Martinez as the primary setter dished off 31 sets.

Medgar Evers started the first set strong, scoring seven of the first nine points of the stanza. They would build a double-digit lead and would take the set 25-13. In the second, both teams traded the lead back-and-forth to start. With the Cougars up 7-6, St. Joseph's took advantage of attack and ball handling errors to move ahead. They would chip away at the deficit down to four, but a Bears kill closed out the set to even it at one game apiece.

Trailing early in the third, Medgar would get five straight service aces from Miller and got kills from Chance and a few St. Joseph's errors to build an advantage. The Cougars would close the set on a 9-2 run to earn a 25-15 win in set three. A wild fourth set saw Medgar Evers grab a 13-9 lead, but the Bears roared back with five straight points at 14-13. They would even it at 15, but six straight points would help St. Joseph's to send the match to a fifth and deciding set.

The final set saw Medgar Evers rally back from five points down and would even the score at 13-13. However, two Bears kills from Kennedy and Delacruz closed out the Cougars.

Up next is a CUNYAC multi-match taking place at Baruch College. Medgar Evers will take on Hunter College at 10:00 a.m. then will face York (N.Y.) at 12:00 p.m. Follow MECAthletics.com, MEC Athletics on Facebook, and @MECCougars on Twitter for more Cougars updates, stats and recaps.
