Chance Slams 25 Kills as Men's Volleyball Earns First Win of 2016 over Sarah Lawrence

Box Score Senior Jamal Chance (Gouyave, Grenada) tied his career-high with 25 kills along with 15 digs and five service aces as the Medgar Evers men's volleyball team shook off a first-set defeat to earn its first win of the 2016 season with a 3-1 [23-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-16] over Sarah Lawrence Friday night in Bronxville.

Chance slammed 25 of the team's season-high 46 kills on the night for the Cougars (1-13), and also added four blocks. Shaquille Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 11 kills to go with five aces and nine digs, while Cecil Clarke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied four kills and 11 digs. Angel Seda (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished out a season-best 31 assists.

The Gryphons (0-11) were paced in defeat by Callan Moor, led the team with 11 kills along with nine digs. Isaac Gamboa chipped in with six kills, while Alex Carroll connected on five kills and two service aces.

In the first set, Sarah Lawrence battled back from being down 22-19 to score six of the last seven points and take the win 25-23. The second saw Medgar Evers roar out to an early lead with six straight points. After the Gryphons cut the deficit down to 14-10, kills by Miller and Chance helped expand the lead and a Clarke kill sealed their set victory.

Midway through the third and up 9-7, the Cougars took advantage of some attack errors by their opponents to pad their lead. Chance totaled eight kills in the stanza, while Miller slammed five of his own as they grabbed a 25-16 win. A great start in set four saw the Cougars score nine of the first 11 points and would not look back as they earned their first win since March 19, 2015.

The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as part of a CUNYAC multi-match against both CCNY and John Jay at Lehman College. They play the Beavers at 1:00 p.m. and the Bloodhounds at 5 p.m. Follow MECAthletics.com, MEC Athletics on Facebook and @MECCougars on Twitter for updates, stats and game recaps.
