Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Following a first set victory, the Medgar Evers men's volleyball could not sustain the momentum as they fell in four sets to borough rival St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), 3-1 [25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 19-25], Tuesday night at the Cougars Cave.
For the Cougars (1-16),
Jamal Chance (Gouyave, Grenada) led the team with 16 kills along with 11 digs and four service aces.
Shaquille Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added six kills and eight digs, while
Kareem Cyrus (Brooklyn) chipped in with four kills and three aces of his own.
Both Thomas Kennedy and Clyde Delacruz paced the Bears (3-14) in the victory with 14 kills apiece. Kennedy also added a team-high 13 digs, while Alec Smalley slammed eight kills and nine digs. Norrin Martinez dished out 40 assists.
A back-and-forth affair in the first set, Medgar Evers would take control after being tied at 19-19 by taking advantage of four straight St. Joseph's attack errors. A bad Bears set helped seal the victory in set one at 25-21. The Bears had an early lead in the second, but Medgar would fight back with St. Joseph's miscues helped to even the score at 21-21. Tied at 23, Kennedy would slam a kill then Martinez's service ace helped even the match.
After falling down 21-12 in set three, Chance would compile two kills along with Cyrus firing two straight service aces as the got within 24-23, but an attack error would move the Bears ahead. Another Medgar Evers rally helped get to within four points late in the fourth, but they would fall 25-19 and take the win on the road.
