Box Score 2 Cougars Fall 3-0 to Baruch, Then Suffer Tough 3-0 Loss to York in CUNYAC Tri-Match

(JAMAICA, N.Y.) – The men's volleyball team traveled to York College for a CUNYAC tri-match against the host York Cardinals and the Bearcats of Baruch College Saturday afternoon. The Cougars made some nice plays in the first match against Baruch but they would eventually lose in straight sets. In the next matchup against York the Cougars battled and competed tough before losing in straight sets. With both losses, Medgar Evers falls to 0-18 (0-8 CUNYAC) on the year while Baruch improves to 6-10 (5-0) and York moves to 4-13 (1-3).

In the first match of the day, the Cougars faced off against Baruch and played a great first set. They started out evenly matched and even on the scoreboard at 9-9. Both teams took turns back and forth taking the lead throughout the set. After a kill from junior
Ronald Bonhomme (Brooklyn, N.Y.) the Cougars cut the deficit to one, trailing 15-14. Baruch then rattled off five quick points thanks to a couple kills making the score 20-14. Baruch pulled away after that winning the opening set 25-17.

The second set Medgar Evers fell behind early 7-2 but made a nice run back to cut the lead to two. Baruch would push ahead and win the second set 25-11. The third set was similar to the second as the Cougars struggled at times but had some bright spots as they lost the set 25-10. The Cougars were led by sophomore
Mark Reid (Atlanta, GA) who had a team-high four kills. Classmate
Kareem Cyrus (St. Georges, Grenada) had a nice match recording 11 assists for the Cougars. Baruch was led by
Steven Lopez who had nine kills on the match.

In the second match of the day the Cougars took on the host York in a very competitive matchup. In the opening set both teams went back and forth exchanging leads until Medgar Evers went on a 5-0 run thanks in part to juniors
Ronald Bonhomme and
Shaquille Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Bonhomme had a kill and Miller had a service ace during the run. York took the lead back later after an error from the Cougars making the score 14-13. York was winning 20-15 and was able to hold off the Cougars to win the set 25-23.

The second set started out evenly with both teams tied at 9-9. York would go on to win the set 25-14 finishing on a 16-5 run. The third set was very competitive as Medgar Evers had a 7-3 early lead until York went on a 9-0 run to make the score 12-7. They would pull away and beat the Cougars 25-16 in the third and final set.

The Cougars were led by
Shaquille Miller who had a team-high five kills while
Kareem Cyrus had another great game with a season high 12 assists. York was led by
Frederis Tapia who had eight kills on the match. Men's volleyball is back in action Tuesday, March 14
th when they visit the College of Mt. St. Vincent in a non-conference matchup beginning at 7 p.m.
