The Medgar Evers men's soccer team (0-1) began its 2021 campaign on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Eagles of St. Joseph's College-Long Island (1-1) by a score of 3-0 in a non-conference match played at Danzi Stadium in East Patchogue, NY.

Competing in its first match since the regular season finale during the 2019 season (October 23, 2019), the Cougars were thrilled to return to the pitch, but Medgar Evers wasn't able to muster much on the offensive side.

Vincent Mariani opened the scoring in the 36th minute when he finished off a rebound attempt with his head, catapulting the Eagles to a 1-0 advantage. That would be the lone tally of the opening 45 minutes of action.

St. Joseph's College-Long Island carried a 1-0 lead into the 66th minute, when Adam Murasso scored off of a beautiful Justin Garcia corner. Murasso used his head to ricochet the ball into the net, increasing the Eagles' edge to a pair of goals. Later, Sebastiano Bartolotta put the exclamation point on his team's victory, registering a goal in the 88th minute when he collected a loose ball outside of the box and beat the Medgar Evers netminder Woodson Chery to the right side.

St. Joseph's goalkeeper Tyler Flaherty made just one save and earned a shutout.

The Eagles outshot the Cougars 26-6, winning 10 corners to Medgar Evers' two.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Monday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Yonkers, NY to take on the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence. Start-time at Fleming Field is scheduled for 7:00pm.
