Medgar Evers shuts down John Jay 1-0 on Cougars Appreciation Day; Hackett, Dorfeuille, Soumare all honored

Box Score The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team finalized its 2024 campaign with a thrilling victory, defeating the Bloodhounds of John Jay College on Cougars Appreciation Day by a score of 1-0. The match took place at the Red Hook Recreation Center in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, Medgar Evers wrapped-up the year at 3-12-2 (1-5-1 CUNYAC), while John Jay fell to 3-10-2 (2-3-1 CUNYAC).

Prior to the match, the Medgar Evers Department of Athletics took a few moments to honor seniors Daniel Hackett, Dadley Dorfeuille, and Hamou Soumare in a special ceremony. Head Coach Jack Willem Thelusma said some heartfelt words about each senior before he and Director of Athletics Chetara Murphy presented them with commemorative framed posters.

The teams combined for 14 shots in the opening half, with Medgar Evers registering nine, and the Bloodhounds five, however, only three of those 14 were on target. Cougars netminder Chris Edosomwan stopped the only shot he faced, while Bloodhounds standout Tyler Solis stopped two shots. After 45 minutes of action, the teams were scoreless.

After registering three assists in Medgar Evers' previous match at York, veteran Taye Simon broke through for first and lone goal of the match at 56:30, tapping a ball home off a beautiful through-ball by Bernado Guerrier.

John Jay College registered just two shots on target over the final 33:30 of the match, both courtesy of Marcel Tovar, but Edosomwan was there to make the saves and preserve the Cougars' 1-0 edge. The Bloodhounds had a golden opportunity to tie the match, but Mario Parano's shot hit the crossbar, and his follow-up shot went wide. From there, the Cougars played smart defense, eventually holding up for a terrific 1-0 win.

For Medgar Evers keeper Chris Edosomwan, it was his first career shutout in goal, making five overall saves in the process. John Jay's Solis stopped four shots in a losing effort.
