Freshman Derek Wicker earns CUNYAC Rookie of the Week distinction

The CUNY Athletic Conference announced its award winners for the period of Monday, January 29 through Sunday, February 4, and the Medgar Evers men's basketball team was represented by Derek Wicker, as the big man was selected the conference's Rookie of the Week.

Wicker, a Queens School of Inquiry High School product, earned the distinction following his solid efforts in home games against Lehman College (January 30) and the City College of New York (February 2). Last Tuesday against the Lightning, Wicker scored eight points, snatched 13 rebounds, and led all players with three blocked shots. Three days later against CCNY, the freshman scored a team-high 13 points to along with six rebounds. For the week, he averaged 10.5 points and 9.5 rebounds.

During this 2023-2024 campaign, Wicker's first on the Cougars, the forward has appeared in 21 of the team's 22 contests, earning 12 starts. His 87 rebounds are good for second on the squad, and his 49 converted on field goals tie him for third on the team. He is expected to continue to play a key role as the program looks to finish strong down the stretch.

Medgar Evers returns to action on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the ARC Arena to take on CUNYAC foe Baruch College. Start-time is scheduled for 7:30pm.
