Cougars register match-high in points, but still fall to Cardinals in straight sets in CUNYAC contest

Box Score The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match on Thursday evening, falling to the Cardinals of York College by scores of 13-25, 7-25, and 7-25. The clash took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, Queens. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-14 on the 2025 campaign (0-11 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals improved to 5-11 (3-7 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Kayshaun Higgs and Jose Janvier tied for the team-high of two kills. Shabbir Ahmed contributed a team-high seven digs on the evening, and Nkosi Fraser's two digs led all Medgar Evers players.

York College's Sebastian Gomez's 17 kills led all players on the evening. He also added six kills in the Cardinals' victory. Ian McIntosh contributed eight kills, seven service aces, and four digs, and Iteoluwakiisi Adegboye finalized his evening with eight kills and three digs. Stanley Sanchez's 36 assists and eight service aces were both match-highs.

In the opening set, four service aces from Stanley Sanchez helped the Cardinals build a 7-0 advantage. The Cougars responded by scoring four of the next five points, courtesy of four Cardinals errors, to slice their deficit to four points (8-4). The pendulum then swung in the direction of the hosts, as York responded by rattling off five straight points, with the latter three coming courtesy of Gomez's string of kills, to snatch a 13-4 edge.

The Cougars battled back yet again, putting together a 6-2 run to close to within five (15-10), but moment later, three consecutive kills by McIntosh pushed York College's edge to nine, 19-10. Later, with York College owning a 23-13 edge, the Cardinals closed out the first set with consecutive kills by Gomez and McIntosh.

York College used a combination of 10 kills and three service aces to build a commanding 15-1 lead in the second set. Later, McIntosh's ferocious kill gave the Cardinals a set-high 19-point edge, 23-4. Medgar Evers secured the ensuing three points in a stretch that was capped by a Fraser kill, but the Cardinals collected the final two points of the set thanks to Vincent Agokei, as he notched a kill and followed it with a set-clinching service ace.

The Cardinals built a sizable 16-1 advantage in the third set thanks in part to six service aces (four by McIntosh, two by Sanchez) and three kills. Later, Kayshaun Higgs' kill shrunk Medgar Evers' deficit to 13 (18-5), but the Cardinals stayed in full control, finishing the set on a 7-2 run to complete the sweep.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will make the short trip to Brooklyn College's West Quad Gymnasium to battle the Bulldogs. Start-time for the CUNYAC clash is scheduled for 6:00pm.
