Following hearty efforts at Misericordia and Lincoln University (PA) Invitationals, Cougars sweep CUNYAC distinctions

The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its outdoor track and field honorees for the period of Monday, April 14 through Sunday, April 20, and the Medgar Evers Cougars dominated the distinctions, capturing all six awards. On the men's side, standout Reco Griffith was tabbed the Athlete of the Week and the Rookie of the Week, and Omari Hinds captured the Field Athlete of the Week distinction. For the women, Thenica Thompson earned Athlete of the Week honors, while Rinnah Brown was selected the Field Athlete of the Week, as well as the Rookie of the Week.

The four aforementioned student-athletes earned the conference praise following their sensational efforts last week at the Misericordia University Invitational (4/15) and the Lincoln University (PA) Invitational (4/17).

At the Lincoln University Invitational on Thursday, Reco Griffith placed first in both the 100-meter dash (10.56 seconds) and the 200 (22.22), with the 100 time ranking among the top-50 nationally.  He was also a member of the Cougars' 4x100 relay that posted its best time of the season (43.74 seconds), while MEC's 4x400 team ran a 4:02.78.

Omari Hinds earned his third straight Field Athlete of the Week honor after posting the top mark of the season in the conference in the triple jump and placing second at the Lincoln University Invitational with a leap of 13.22 meters.  He also placed second in the high jump (1.80 meters) and third in the long jump (6.60 meters).

Thenica Thompson placed sixth at the Lincoln University Invitational Thursday in the 100-meter dash, running a conference-best time of 13.05 seconds, and also placed fourth in the 200 (27.49 seconds). She was also a member of the Cougars' 4x100 (51.94 seconds) and 4x400 (4:35.39) relays that each posted the top time in the conference.

Rinnah Brown broke the program record in the long jump, leaping 4.94 meters at Lincoln, while also finishing second in the triple jump (9.83 meters).  Her long jump mark is currently No. 2 in the conference while her triple jump mark is fourth.  In addition to running in both MEC relays, she placed second in the 400 hurdles (1:13.75), currently No. 2 in the conference.  Brown finished fourth in the 400 (1:03.83) and fifth in the 200 (27.91) and 100 hurdles (17.90).  Her 400 time is No. 2 in the CUNYAC.

The Cougars will return to the track and field this Saturday, as they'll travel to New Haven, Connecticut to participate in the Jack Malloney/Jim Barber Invitational, hosted by Southern Connecticut State University. Start-time is scheduled for 10:00am.
