Men's Outdoor Track & Field

Following tremendous efforts at Jim Barber / Jack Malloney Invitational, Cougars sweep CUNYAC weekly distinctions

The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its outdoor track and field honorees for the period of Monday, April 21 through Sunday, April 27, and the Medgar Evers Cougars dominated the distinctions, capturing all six awards. On the men's side Chrisnel Nicolas was selected the Track Athlete of the Week, Omari Hinds earned the Field Athlete of the Week honor, and Reco Griffith was selected the conference's top rookie. Medgar's women were represented by Toshel Goffe (Track Athlete of the Week), Rinnah Brown (Field Athlete of the Week), and Thenica Thompson (Rookie of the Week).

The six aforementioned student-athletes earned the conference praise following their sensational efforts this past weekend at the Jack Malloney / Jim Barber Invitational, which unfolded from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT. Following the announcement of the honors, Head Coach Hugh Reid spoke.

"I'd like to congratulate the six student-athletes who received recognition from the CUNY Athletic Conference for their performances this past weekend," Coach Reid said. "These student-athletes continue to rewrite the history books for the track and field programs at Medgar Evers College, and they're locked in and focus on the upcoming CUNYAC Championship meet scheduled for this Saturday. I look forward to seeing them continue to shatter glass ceilings."

Chrisnel Nicolas impressed by qualifying for CUNYACs in the 110m hurdles (17.44), setting PRs in both the 400m hurdles (1:01.98) and the steeplechase (12:39.77), finishing 4th and 6th in his events. His grit and endurance were on full display across three tough events.

Omari Hinds had a record-breaking meet, highlighted by his school-record long jump of 6.86m and a CUNYAC/AARTFC qualification. His PR of 1.90m in the high jump further showcased his dominance in the field events.

Reco Griffith continues to shine in his rookie campaign, clocking a CUNYAC qualifying 22.31 in the 200m and playing a key role in the record-breaking 4x100m relay.

Toshel Goffe earned CUNYAC and AARTFC qualifying marks in the 100m (12.44) while also placing 3rd in the 400m (59.83), solidifying her position among the region's top sprinters.

Rinnah Brown set a new MEC school record in the long jump with a leap of 5.00m, and added a top performance in the triple jump (10.02m), continuing her outstanding rookie season.

Thenica Thompson qualified for CUNYACs in both the 100m and 200m, and helped her 4x100m relay team place 3rd. Her speed and reliability across events make her a critical piece of the Cougars' success.

The Cougars will return to action this Saturday, as both teams will compete in the 2025 CUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, looking to stake their claim as conference titlists. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:00am. Keep it posted to MECAthletics.com and CUNYAthletics.com for the latest developments in the Cougars' quests for glory.
