Danyelle Foster (Brooklyn, N.Y./Newtown) continued her outstanding play with her third double-double, but the Medgar Evers women's basketball team fell on the road to York (N.Y.), 56-48, in CUNYAC play Tuesday night.

The junior guard Foster poured in 17 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a losing effort for the Lady Cougars (0-4, 0-1 CUNYAC).
Nia Tompkins (Queens, N.Y./The Young Women's Leadership Academy) also tallied 17 points, including four three-pointers, and corralled five rebounds.

Kimonia Mullings  (Queens, N.Y./Flushing) tied a team-best with 17 boards of her own.
Janaisha Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lafayetter) added 10 points and five rebounds, while
Ashley Desir (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) dished out a team-best five assists.

Angelika Ruggiano led the way for the Cardinals (2-3, 1-0 CUNYAC), netted a game-high 28 points, while Claudia Rhoden notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jicgara Grant grabbed 16 boards in the victory.

A defensive battle in the first half saw both teams struggle to put the ball in the basket, both shooting under 33% from the field as York led 19-16 at intermission. Medgar Evers looked to grab control at the start of the third quarter, going on a 9-0 run in the first 1:15 of the stanza.

The Lady Cougars would lead by as many as seven points, but the Cardinals would battle back and chip away at the deficit. Ruggiano was the catalyst of their attack, scoring 14 points in the third as Medgar held on to a 41-40 advantage.

In the fourth, both squads fought back-and-forth as both wanted to earn their first conference victory. After Foster scored a basket to cut the deficit to 49-48 at 2:15 remaining, the Cardinals would not allow another point and would close the game with seven straight points to seal the win.

Following the holiday, the Lady Cougars will host their annual Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament presented by the United States Army Saturday and Sunday at the Cougars Cave. They will take on Eastern Nazarene in the semifinals at 8 p.m. and will face either the College of New Rochelle or Trinity (Conn.) Sunday.
