Women's soccer midfielder Liya Workennah earns 2024 CUNYAC Sportsmanship Award

On Wednesday afternoon, November 20, the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) announced the league's all-star awards and teams for the 2024 women's soccer season, as voted upon by the league's head coaches. Medgar Evers College was represented by freshman midfielder Liya Workennah, as she received the necessary votes to earn the Sportsmanship Award. Following the announcement of the awards, Cougars' Head Coach Carmen Skrine praised Workennah.

"Liya has been such a positive addition to our women's soccer program here at Medgar Evers," Cadet said. "She has brought a very natural, organic positivity to our team, uplifting other players and encouraging them to stay focused and give 100 percent every time they take the field. As a freshman, she has handled herself very professionally, and it is very gratifying to see her get recognized by the CUNY Athletic Conference. I'm very proud of her."

Workennah showed tremendous consistency this season, appearing in 11 of the team's 13 matches, tying her for third-most on the Cougars. She placed second on the team in shots and shots on-goal, and prided herself on being a beacon of positivity for a young squad looking to establish itself.
