Cougars lose crucial CUNYAC game to Beavers, 69-61, at Nat Holman Gymnasium Friday evening

Box Score The Medgar Evers women's basketball team suffered a tough loss on Friday evening, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York by a score of 69-61. The contest took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 2-14 on the 2025-2026 campaign (1-5 CUNYAC), while CCNY improved to 4-10 on the year (2-4 CUNYAC).

Alexis Davis continued her stellar scoring stretch despite the Cougars' loss, as the senior poured in a game-high 28 points (12-21 FG) while tying for the game-high of nine rebounds, leading all players with four blocked shots, and adding two steals. Aaliyah Lyons finished with 16 points while tying for the game-high of five assists and pulling down two rebounds, and Jennifer Metra (six points, six rebounds, five assists) and Nana Samake (six points, three rebounds) also had notable contributions for Medgar Evers.

In the Beavers' win, Ashley Colon connected on three triples, finishing with a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Additionally, it was Blessings Joseph-Pascall finalizing her evening with 17 points, while tying for the game-high of five assists, and swiping a game-high four steals. She also snatched three rebounds, as well. Ashley Subervi finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, and a pair of steals, and Yazmin Loma Romero contributed nine points, three rebounds, three steals, and a pair of assists.

The Cougars trailed 11-5 at one juncture of the first quarter, but scored six of the final eight points of the period to inch to within two (13-11) after 10 minutes of action.

In the second quarter, CCNY led 20-15, before a converted Davis jumper brought Medgar Evers to within three. Over the course of the final 2:40 of the half, however, the Beavers put together a ferocious 13-4 run to take 33-21 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Colon was excellent during that aforementioned stretch, scoring eight points, including a buzzer-beating triple at the horn.

The Beavers spent a majority of the third period extending their advantage, going up by as many as 16 points (46-30) with 2:18 remaining in the period. Consecutive buckets by Samake kept the Cougars close, and Medgar inched to within 11 (49-38) as time expired on the third quarter.

Medgar Evers scored the opening seven points of the fourth quarter, courtesy of three consecutive buckets by Davis, and a made free throw by Lyons. That brought the Cougars to within four (49-45) with 7:14 to play. CCNY boosted its advantage to eight on a hoop by Jocelyn Ramos with 5:11 left, but on Medgar Evers' next possession, Davis buried a trifecta to get the Cougars within five (55-50).

The Cougars were able to get to within four (60-56) with 1:11 left, but that would be the closest that the visitors would get, as CCNY, which struggled for most of the evening at the stripe, converted on five out of six freebees in the final 24 seconds of action to secure the victory.

Medgar Evers lost the game despite being the more efficient team shooting the ball, as the Cougars converted on 42.9 percent of their attempts from the floor (24-56), while CCNY connected on 24 of 61 shot attempts (39.3 percent). Both teams were plagued by missed free throws, as the Beavers misfired on 16 freebees (17-33, 51.5 percent), and Medgar Evers only connected on 11 out of 27 at the stripe (40.7 percent).

CCNY dominated the glass, snatching 55 rebounds compared to 42 for the visitors. The Beavers also held advantages in assists (13-11) and steals (13-9), but the Cougars swatted five shots compared to two for the Beavers. Medgar Evers also won the turnover battle, committing 23 miscues, while the hosts had 26.

Medgar Evers returns to action on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars will return home to host the Hunter College Hawks. Start-time for that CUNYAC clash is scheduled for 5:00pm.
